Harriers relishing step up in class

- ATHLETICS PETER POWELL

LIFE in a higher division in the youth development league lower age group did Stockport Harriers no harm at Woodbank Park.

The host club pulled their weight but no one could catch visitors West Cheshire who enjoyed a leading margin of 117 points to become clear winners of the first match to Stockport Harriers’ second position with 479. Trafford were not far behind in third with 461, so there is all to play for in this summer season.

Outstanding results came the way of the under 15’s age group in the 100 metres sprint with all four competitors winning their events consisting of Oskar Wajs and Katie Waterworth in the A events and Emilio Ramirez and Catherine Giller fresh from her sports hall athletics exploits in the B competitions.

Fabulous Fabio Carosi made it a fourth place finish in the under 15s 800 metres A race (2:19:7) whilst club mate Ben Batho took 5th in the equivalent age 1500 metres A race dipping below the five-minute barrier to record 4:59:1.

Cameron Stewart (under 15’s) jumped to it in both the high jump (1st A 1:68) and the long jump event (first A 4:85) and then helped himself to another first position in the 80 metres hurdles in 13:6

The chips will be down at the next meeting hosted by Trafford AC on 30th May at Longford park with Stockport taking a slender second position points advantage to Longford park for the second encounter of what is already turning out to be a hard fought league competition.

Also promoted to a higher division were the Harriers senior men and women, now in division 3 of the Northern track and field league with the first match at Stretford.

As expected, the host club turned out runaway leaders with 437 points with Stockport on 268 points in fourth just 10 points ahead of Bury AC (258) in fifth position.

All the winter training paid off for the ladies who did the double in the 3,000 metres with Mollie Williams first in the A event (10:23:3) and Elizabeth Apsley also recording 1st in the B competition in 10:54:6 whilst in the 1500 metres A event a useful win was recorded by Kevin Acton stopping the clock in 4:11:0.

Good support is requested for the forthcoming youth development upper age group second round match in division two this coming Saturday (16/5) at Leverhulme park, Bolton with the first events starting at 11:15 a.m.
