POLICE are hunting for a robber after two masked men armed with knives raided a supermarket in Cheadle Hulme.

Two security guards were injured when the robbers struck at the Co-op store in Cheadle Road at about 2.15pm on Tuesday.

The attackers, who were wearing balaclavas, attacked the security guards and stole a cash box before fleeing the shop.

They then made off in a black Audi, driving down Queen’s Road, where they changed into a white Vauxhall Mokka.

Police followed the Mokka but the men rammed the police car and attacked it with a sledgehammer, before driving away and changing into a silver Citroen Saxo, which was later recovered on Cambrian Road.

The Mokka was later recovered on Sherbourne Road.

Eye-witnesses to the attack said the raiders were armed with a machete and an axe.

One witness said: “Two people legged it in and then ran out of the back. They had an axe and a machete.

“I would have thought they got something.”

A nearby shopkeeper, who asked not to be named, said one of the security guards suffered an injury to his left arm.

They said: “The men were wearing balaclavas and attacked a security guard.

“The victim looked like he suffered an injury to his left arm.”

Police confirmed that both security guards suffered cuts to their arms and one remains in hospital.

However, their injuries are not thought to be serious.

A 23-year-old man was arrested later on suspicion of armed robbery and remains in police custody for questioning.

However, GMP are still looking for the other offender and their accomplices.

Witnesses to the attack and car chase are being urged to contact police.

Detective Inspector Julia Bowden of Stockport division said: “We are appealing for witnesses and information, and are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw the offenders changing cars.

“I want to assure the public that we are doing our best to apprehend the offenders and I would urge anyone who witnessed what happened to speak to police.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 9 770 .
