Woman, 86, plunges to her death from bridge
APENSIONER plunged to her death in front of horrified shoppers on a busy street in Stockport.
Emergency services raced to Great Underbank in the town centre at around 2pm on Friday.
They found an 86-yearold woman who was seen to fall from a bridge which crosses the road.
Police closed the street whilst paramedics desperately tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road remained closed as police and ambulance crews dealt with the incident.
The woman has yet to be formally identified.
Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and they have passed a file to the coroner.
Those working around the scene, close to the Stockport Air Raid Shelters and the busy Primark store, spoke of their shock at the incident.
One man, who works nearby but did not want to be named, said: “I was just arriving back as they were putting up the police tape close to the road.
“Then they increased the size of the cordon to keep people well away.
“It was really busy at that time, like it always is, because most people were out on their lunch break.
“The staff from the (Merseyway) shopping centre definitely saw it as they dialled 999.”
Another woman said: “We were just busy working and suddenly lots of emergency services arrived and closed off the road. We were told a woman had fallen from the bridge. It’s very sad.”
A GMP spokesman said: “Police were called to Great Underbank in Stockport town centre shortly after 1.50pm as a woman had fallen from a walkway.
“Emergency
services attended and attempted to treat an 86-year-old woman found with serious injuries but unfortunately she was pronounced dead at the scene.”
The incident is the sec- ond tragedy in the Stockport area in a matter of days.
A man in his 20s was found dead in woodland in Marple on Wednesday afternoon. It is believed he was found by an elderly woman walker who called police.
The death was ruled by police as non-suspicious and a file has now been passed on to the coroner.
