Pupils host their own elections to choose their new school council

-

SCHOOL children were given a taste of democracy as they held their very own elections.

The youngsters at St Mary’s Primary, in Heaton Norris, took to the polls to decide who would be on the school council.

Pupils from Year 4 and 5 arranged their election to coincide with the General Election.

They converted one of the classrooms into campaign headquarters and prospective candidates were nominated.

The youngsters made their own candidate rosettes, ballot papers and boxes and voting booths.

The elections opened at 9am on Friday, May 7, and each year group was invited into the hall to cast their votes.

The newly elected council was announced by returning officer, headteacher Cathie Cunliffe.

The winning candidates were Amelia Coughlin, Jack MacCormick, Amelia Vaughan Aimson, Alysha Kidd, Coby Breen, Jasmine Green, Kenga Mubita, Kyle Conboy, Mia Cotter, Kacper Wiacek, Ellie Wood and Liseli Mubita. Mrs Cunliffe said: “It was a great event and enabled the children to understand the similar process taking place throughout the country for the General Election.”
