Store staff host party to mark 50 years of friendship

-

A GOLDEN jubilee party to celebrate 50 years of a scheme that organises friendship groups for older people has been hailed a success.

Contact the Elderly runs several groups and they met for a celebration at Woodbank Community Centre, on Turncroft Lane, in Offerton.

Most members are in their 80s or 90s and around 20 people attended to enjoy music from The Lamplighters - a duo who play the accordion and drum.

Guests also tucked into cake and were given a goodie bag to take home.

The party was hosted by staff at the Sainsbury’s store on Warren Street, in the town centre, who made cakes and donated other food.

Jan Atkinson, from Contact the Elderly, said: “I can’t believe how much the guests have enjoyed getting all the groups together today we can’t thank Sainsbury’s enough.”

Store manager Adam Whitmore added: “It was a delight to see so many people enjoying themselves, it was a pleasure to be able to host this party.

“The Lamplighters went down a storm and my staff excelled themselves.”

Contact the Elderly will be in the Sainsbury’s store on Tuesday, May 26, from 10am to 2pm to try and recruit more guests and volunteers.
