Geoff leads Disley in year of change

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

DISLEY Golf Club’s new captain Geoff Gable, a legend in amateur soccer, is looking forward to an enjoyable year in his role.

Geoff said: “The start of my captain’s year at Disley has seen a great deal of change.

“Like many clubs, in current times revenue is a big issue and just recently the club has sold a listed farm building and barn with the result that the club is now debt free and in a strong financial position.

“In addition, we have acquired the services of a new steward and stewardess, resulting in a complete revamp of the catering services on offer.

“It is intended that Disley will open a restaurant service to members and non members alike including a Sunday carvery, evening meals and a stunning venue with top cuisine for weddings, birthdays, christenings etc.

“We have also appointed a new club secretary in Jackie Davies and these are exciting times.

“I am honoured to be captain in the club’s 126th year since four ‘gentlemen’ met in the Rams Head to come up with the land and idea to form Disley Golf Club.

“Disley is a hillside club in great condition, a good test of golf and without doubt views as good as any course in the area.

“We will never be a cham- pionship course but if you want a game at a friendly and welcoming club come and give us a try.”

Geoff joined Disley 38 years ago and his best handicap (now 11) was seven and his favourite hole is the 13th because of the panoramic views from Manchester to Kinder Scout and he also had a hole in one there.

In his other sporting life amateur soccer was Geoff’s passion and he is still President of Denton Town where he has been involved since he was 16 playing and administrat- ing and he was also President of the Lancashire and Cheshire AFL in 2002.

Apart from Denton Town he also supports Man United and his dream four ball would include Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Brian Clough – not necessarily because they played golf but as a football and golf fanatic you can imagine the conversation!

His chosen Captain’s charity is Cancer Research UK through Relay For Life Stockport.

Disley’s men were in singles Stableford mode and Tony Collinson was the main man with 39 points seeing him home by one from Simon Carter, Nathan Singleton and Peter Zadoroshynl.

Disley ladies also played a singles Stableford and J Blackham won a cpo on 34 points from E Critchlow.
