Sporting stars in the spotlight
THOSE who have achieved excellence on the track, pitch, court or in the pool will be honoured at the Stockport Sports Awards.
Organised by Sport Stockport with Life Leisure, and supported by the Stockport Express, the annual event takes place this year at Stockport Sports Village, Woodley, on September 25.
The winners will go on to represent the borough at the Greater Manchester awards in November where national athletes will be among the competition.
Nominations are now sought across the eight categories with closing date for applications August 7. The categories include: The ‘Fred Perry’ Sports Achiever of the Year
Young Achiever of the Year
Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year Coach of the Year Club of the Year The Sir Stanley Matthews Award – Unsung Hero Volunteer of the Year
Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award
John Hargreaves, Sport Stockport chairman, said: “This year’s event promises to be an unbelievable celebration of sport in Stockport.
“We have so many individuals and clubs to be proud of in the borough and look forward to recognising their achievements on the night.
“We are also extremely grateful to the local media, particularly the Stockport Express who have agreed to be a major media partner for the awards.
“Their contribution will be invaluable in ensuring everyone in Stockport can contribute to these awards.”
Last year there was a diverse range of winners.
Lauren Quigley, who won Commonwealth Games medals in Glasgow representing England in the swimming pool, was named the Fred Perry Achiever of the Year.
Others included Reddish North End Football Club (Club of the Year), athlete Danielle Bradshaw (Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year) and Stan Aspinall,
Sports from Stockport Trinity Cricket Club (Volunteer of the Year).
Nominations can be completed electronically or hand written and should cover achievements in the last 12 months (September 14 to August 15).
