THE surroundings were beautiful beside the picturesque Sempachersee near Lucerne – but the athletic work had still to be undertaken in nearby Rottwill by international wheelchair coach Rick Hoskin’s up and coming squad at the IPC Grand Prix meeting.

For her efforts, Stockport’s Carly Tait secured a fifth position world wheelchair ranking in the 100 metres (19:67) and a personal best besides, while Nate Williams, Michael Taylor, Ben Callander and Dan Bramall also hammered out many personal and season’s bests over the sprint distances.

A special recognition award was made to parents Dave and Bernie Callander for work undertaken for and on behalf of the Kuwait paralympic committee, which rounded off a good meeting and included the 41st Swiss open national championships.

From the hills of Switzerland to the fells of the Lake District, Stockport Harrier Elizabeth Apsley continues her uphill running mission with a fine third position in the European Mountain running trials at Glenridding behind Heidi Davies (Brecon) and Georgia Male (Leeds City) in the under 20’s ladies event.

She now awaits a hoped for call up to participate in the European uphill mountain running championships which takes place in Porto Moniz, Madeira on July 4th.

A hard-fought athletics match took place in the Youth development league in the lower age group at Longford Park, Stretford.

Stockport’s Oskar Wajs got the ball rolling with a first ‘A’ finish in the under 15 boys’ 100 metres (12:3) while his longer distance colleague Flynn Walsh recorded the same result in the under 15 boys’ 1,500 metre event but could not quite pull off a sub five minutes finish, having to content himself with 5:01:0. He’ll be back for more to shave the seconds off next time.

Cameron Stewart was unstoppable in the boys’ under 15’s long jump, winning the event in 1:72 on count back from Joshua Herrington of Warrington A.C. who equalled the same height . Their battle royal will continue at the next junior league meeting at Ellesmere Port on the 21st June.

Middle distance credentials continued to be showcased at the British Miler’s club meeting at Sport City in the 5,000 metre events with Patrick Martin 12th in 14:14.

In the “C” event, two Jacks were dealt in the form of Jack Martin, second in 14: 30, and one second behind Jack Nixon in third with a time of 14: 31, slicing down his personal best time by a full half a minute in ideal running conditions.
