Midfielder is set to join Hatters

MANAGER Neil Young has revealed that County will be signing a midfielder later this week – and has also insisted the club’s recruitment process is going as well as he could possibly have hoped for.

Stockport have made five signings so far this summer, bringing in Sean O’Hanlon, Gareth Roberts, Karl Ledsham, Danny Morton and Lamin Colley.

Young was awaiting international clearance on the new midfield player as the Express went to press.

“The recruitment process remains ongoing,” he said.

“We have agreed a deal to sign a midfielder and that will be announced later this week once we get international clearance.

“In today’s world it is hard to announce things as clubs want embargos on social media so that things can be announced at the same time, so it’s a bit of a waiting game.

“People might think recruitment has been slow but we have a certain profile of player that we want. We have our targets and, until those targets aren’t there, then we will keep with them.

“We won’t be panicking as we know that, when the season officially starts in August, we will have a lot of good players at the club.

“If we start bringing in players that could be risks then it’s just like putting square pegs in round holes, and we obviously don’t want that.

“We still need to free up some of the budget if we can, but I don’t expect any more players to leave this week.”

Young revealed last week that he hoped to bring in a striker soon, and he admits that is still a work in progress.

“We’ve spoken to a few Football League strikers and there are four or five players we have in mind,” he said.

“These players always have offers from elsewhere so it is difficult to come to a conclusion as these things take time.

“I don’t get frustrated by it though as this is just the norm really, so we just have to be patient.

“So far we have brought in several players that I am very happy with so I don’t have any concerns at this stage.

“We already have a solid idea of how we want to play next season so it’s important that we bring players in that fit the mould.

“Predominantly we will be keeping it simple and playing 4-4-2 but there will obviously be different tactics based on who we come up against and what pitches we play on.”

The next duty for Young and his management staff will be to attend a ‘Meet the Manager’ event at the Bungalow on Hardcastle Road tomorrow, and the boss is relishing the opportunity to engage with the County supporters.

“We know that the fans will have a lot of questions so I’m looking forward to chatting with them,” he said. “It should be a good night, so hopefully there are many fans down at the event as possible.”

All of the funds raised will go towards the Players’ Fund.
