Matthew’s cool trip

-

A TRAILBLAZING teen has received the royal seal of approval after his ingenious invention caused a splash on both sides of the Atlantic.

Matthew Arden, 17, from High Lane, was named Young Engineer of the Year by the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers,

And, as winner of the accolade, he was also awarded a trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, USA, where his invention came fourth in the engineering mechanics section.

The Stockport Grammar School student has since received a letter from Prince Andrew congratulating him on his ‘remarkable achievement’.

Matthew’s awardwinning invention addresses the problem of the filters of cooling fans fitted in electronic equipment becoming clogged with sand and other particles.

His solution was a reversing air filter which uses two fans that change direction when the filters become blocked.

Matthew, whose ambition is to forge a career in electronic engineering, said: “This has been the best experience of my life.

“It’s really changed a lot of things, so much has opened up for me, there are so many opportunities.”
