Plans to redevelop vandalism hit mill to go before the council

-

REGENERATION plans for a mill that has been repeatedly targeted by anti social behaviour could go before the council by the end of the month.

Police were called out to the derelict Elisabeth Mill on Houldsworth Street more than 30 times last summer, after windows were smashed and bricks thrown out onto the street, some damaging cars.

In August, the force also had to launch a huge search after young people were seen using the dangerous building to take part in the ‘ free running’ craze, which involves running through urban landscapes using gymnastic tricks

Last month, the police met with property managers DeTrafford Estates, Councillor Kate Butler and residents of the nearby Victoria Mill to discuss concerns about the site.

Now police have written to residents to explain that regeneration plans for the site are due to go before the council later this month, which could help to solve the problems.

DeTrafford Estates hopes to regenerate and restore the old mill to create 144 one and two bedroom apartments.

They would also convert former mews houses into two, three and four bedroom mews houses and townhouses, and create a public square for residents.

If the plans are approved, DeTrafford Estates will be able to further secure the site and start work in the near future.

In a statement to residents, PC Ashley Clarke said: “Whilst we are aware ( anti social behaviour) has been a great inconvenience to residents in and around Elisabeth Mill, the police have secured prosecutions against offenders who have caused damage at the site, and this has been done with the support of the Community Safety Unit and DeTrafford Estates.”

Residents who witness any further anti social behaviour are asked to contact the police on 101 and to report any problems with the site’s security to DeTrafford Estates on 01625 583541.
