Punk festival rocks on 10th anniversary thanks to fans
PUNK fans enjoyed a weekend of rebellious rock at an event reputed to be the UK’s friendliest festival.
Strummercamp, created in honour of the late Joe Strummer - frontman of legendary punk band The Clash - saw hundreds of revellers descend on Manchester Rugby Club in Cheadle Hulme.
Bands taking to the stage included Ruts DC - famous for their top ten hit Babylon’s Burning - Gold Blade and Urban Voodoo Machine.
Supporters of the much-loved festival had rallied to raise more than £2,000 when it hit financial problems on the eve of the event.
Some 9,000 people made donations as funds flooded in to make sure the bash - celebrating its 10th anniversary this year - went ahead as planned.
Strummercamp organiser Phil Fitzpatrick said their actions ‘were testament to what the festival means to people’ and praised their generosity.
He said: “It was unbelievable.
“The best bit is that it shows what people can do collectively if they just chip in.”
Describing the ‘close knit’ festival as more of a ‘gig in a field’ Phil said the campaign had united festival-goers.
