New rules on inquests are ‘crazy’

-

A DAUGHTER has told of her ‘horror’ at learning she would have to visit a morgue to identify her dad – even if she is at his bedside when he passes away.

Pamela Mottershead, from Marple, is one of many relatives to contact Ann Coffey after learning her 79-year-old father – who has dementia and is in a home in Stockport – would have to have an inquest.

She said she ‘couldn’t believe’ it when she was told what his assessment would mean – and neither could the relatives of the other patients.

“It’s the last thing you want,” she said.

“It’s the hardest decision you can make to put a family member in a home and for me it was really traumatic. But he’s in a fabulous home and he’s never been happier.

“It’s ‘end of life’ now and I don’t want to go through what they are saying I’m going to have to go through.

“Even if you are sitting with them when they pass away, you still have to go to the morgue.

“I was just horrified. They have to get the police out, they have to get an independent doctor out.

“It’s such a waste of resources. An inquest can take up to six months. It’s absolutely crazy.”
