Stockport Express

Wedding became front page news

-

FORMER Stockport Express reporter Jon Keighren, now Media Relations Manager at Manchester University and a director at Stockport County, covered the story at the time: I remember this story well as it was one of my first front page ‘splashes’ after I joined the Express as a junior reporter, straight out of university.

One of the jobs you were given as the new kid on the block was to write up all the ‘hatches, matches and dispatches’ – otherwise known as ‘births, marriages and deaths’. Normally the wedding stories were fairly routine, but when I got a tip-off about the pending ‘Scott-Waters’ nuptials I knew I had a fantastic story on my hands.

Armed with all the information a week before the ceremony, and having spoken to Kim in advance, I was able to send our amazing photographer Bill Lascome along to capture the event and it made the front page the following Wednesday. Given my paltry wages at the time, I was also delighted to be able to sell the story on to some of the nationals, as well.

I often wondered what happened to Neil Scott and Kim Waters.

The Express gave me a wonderful grounding as a journalist and it was a truly amazing place to work, learning my trade from some of the best in the business. We broke some great stories in those days, and the paper continues to deliver some 25 years later.
