IF you were opening a restaurant or a café or a bar, what name would you choose? You would probably think carefully about names which sound warm and welcoming or perhaps use words which suggest high quality food and service.
On a recent battlefields visit to Ypres, I asked the hotel’s concierge to recommend somewhere close by where I could relax and enjoy a meal.
He described a cafe, just round the corner which, he promised, was very popular, ‘il est très populaire’ is what he actually said.
He told me that obviously the Belgian beer was excellent but it was also renowned for its interesting menu, particularly the fresh meat dishes.
That was good enough for me so I nipped out and within a minute I arrived at the small restaurant in question.
It was called Café L’Abattoir – I don’t think so, do you?
I didn’t risk venturing in but I did wonder if this particular cafe wouldn’t be better off opening in Carcassonne.
