Tap into local pool of talent

-

AS business owners we all know the importance of finding the right staff.

Our employees are not only the backbone of our companies but frequently our public face and voice too.

I have written before about my passion for ensuring local people have the skills and ability to access employment opportunities as they arise.

I am pleased, therefore, that Stockport Council runs their Jobs with Training programme to help employers tap into the local talent pool of jobseekers.

In this month’s column I wanted to outline a couple of these for you in the hope your company can benefit.

Jobs with Training is an initiative that offers wage incentives to employers, when they recruit 16-24 year old Stockport residents who have been unemployed for at least 6 months.

Offered as part of the Greater Manchester Commitment to Youth Employment, employers can get up to £3,000 towards the cost of the young person’s wages once they have been employed with a company for six months. The council also offers support as employers organise training for the young person to meet the needs of the business. It is important to highlight that in order to access the grant companies must employ individuals through the Jobs with Training programme.

In addition to this, a Jobs Fair is being held at Stockport Town Hall on September 29, 2015, aimed at linking businesses and jobseekers. If you are an employer expecting to recruit around the time of the Jobs Fair, this is a must event for you to attend.

To find out how your business could benefit from either of these opportunities please contact the council’s Growth Team – econdev@ stockport.gov.uk or 0161 474 3736.
