Full steam ahead for station

DAY trip train company Retro Railtours has teamed up with the Friends of Marple Station to put on a special charter train as part of celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of both Marple and New Mills train stations.

The train will be running to Carlisle on Saturday, July 11 – picking up at both stations as well as Hyde Central, Ashtonunder-Lyne and Stalybridge.

It is formed of vintage carriages from the 1960s and will be taking the scenic route to Carlisle along the rugged Cumbrian coastline, which skirts the Irish Sea.

Passengers will then have a three-to-four-hour break in Carlisle before heading back down south, arriving at final stop New Mills at around 10pm.

There will be three different types of accommodation, from standard class through to the premier dining service, and group discounts are available for parties of eight or more.

There will also be local folk bands on board, as well as a real ale bar and a hot buffet.

Retro Railtours will also be raising money for its chosen charity, The Forget Me Not children’s hospice based in Huddersfield.

The Friends of Marple Station are organising a number of events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the station, which they are tying in with the 125th birthday of the author Agatha Christie, whose famous character Miss Marple is thought to have been named after the town.

These include the launch of a book about the station’s history, and a family festival in Memorial Park.
