Harriers in fourth after epic tussle

ABATTLE royal ensued at Stanney Oaks stadium, Ellesmere Port in the penultimate Youth Development league lower age group.

Stockport fought tooth and nail to ensure maximum points were taken in poor weather conditions.

The best performance of the day came surely from Katie Waterworth with three individual first positions ( 100 metres A, 200 metres B and High Jump A) and she then went on to complete her afternoon along with club mates Holly Benson, Bethan Murray, Emily Jarad and taking the anchor leg of the under 15 girls 4 x 400 metre relay to finish in first position in 51.4.

Good support was also forthcoming from Matthew Connor (1st under 15s B long jump – 4:46) together with Fares Ibrahim who took the gold position in the under 13s B 800 metres to complete the two lap circuit in a creditable 2:32:1.

The Harriers now lie fourth in a very tight track and field league just one point behind Trafford but two in front of Wigan with Warrington trailing some way behind.

All now rests on the final match at Wigan on the 18th July where Stockport need to keep daylight between the host club and themselves and could also do with turning the tables on Trafford to ensure retention in division 1 west.

Harrier Andrew Nixon posted a fine 70 minutes and 23 seconds in his debut half marathon at Hamburg for the 13+ mile course which wended it’s way from the Reeperbahn, along the banks of the river Elbe and through the city centre to the Alster lakes and finished 16th out of a huge international field.

The level of performances have ensured that a record breaking ten Harriers will be competing at the Gateshead International stadium in the English schools championships (10th/11th July) including Mollie Williams who will surely be well up amongst the medal winners in the senior girls 3,000 metres event.

Stockport’s sub four minute miler, Russ Millington will be looking for national honours this weekend (Sunday, live on BBC2) and goes in the senior men’s 5,000 metres event in the Sainsbury’s British athletic championships at Birmingham’s Alexander stadium.

Also this coming weekend, athletes of all ages will be making tracks to Crewe’s Cumberland arena for the second round of the Cheshire track and field league and will be hoping to railroad the opposition in order to increase their influence towards the top of the leader board with a start time of 12 midday on Sunday.
