Broady upbeat ahead of Gof clash
LIAM Broady plays number 16 seed David Goffin of Belgium today for a place in the third round of Wimbledon.
The 21-year-old from Stockport booked his place in round two after defeating experienced Australian Marinko Matosevic 5-7 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3.
Goffin is currently ranked number 15 in the world, but Broady believes he is capable of pulling off the upset again.
“He’s obviously a fantastic player but I don’t think he’s the kind of player that will blow me off court,” says Broady.
“Maybe I’ve jinxed that and he will blow me off court, but I think I’m going to be in the rallies with him. He’ll have weapons but I’m playing well, I’m confident, and hopefully it will be a good match.”
Liam’s sister Naomi lost in disappointing fashion 7-6 6-3 to Mariana Duque-Marino of Colombia.
By her own admission Naomi, who made the second round of the singles and the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles at Wimbledon last year, played well below par.
“I’m obviously disappointed but it’s not the first time I’ve lost a match,” she said. “Statistically on paper she’s ranked much higher even if I had high expectations. She played well, I made too many errors.”
