Cooking sparks a fire drama

-

AN ELDERLY man was rescued from his home after he left the cooker on and sparked a fire.

The pensioner, who is in his 80s, had left food on the grill in his bungalow’s kitchen on Mendip Close, Heaton Norris, on Saturday night.

Firefighters from Whitehill, King Street and Offerton stations were called to the home at 10pm.

They found the elderly man inside and led him to safety before using a hose reel to extinguish the blaze.

Crews also used a fan to clear the home of smoke and the man was not seriously hurt.

Greater Manchester Fire Service tells people not to leave cooking unsupervised or start preparing food if you are feeling tired. It is one of the leading causes of fire in the borough.

Firefighters from the same stations were also called to the Co-op, on Buxton Road, Great Moor, the following morning.

A fault with the electrical supply had caused a fire in the store’s basement at 8.30am.

Although the fire was out crews arrived they cordoned off the area around the shop and spent over two hours at the scene checking the blaze was fully out.
