A walk to remember
A PERFECT walk on a perfect day. Such was the Stockport Ramblers walk from Heptonstall in June which took place in sunny conditions under blue skies and with a gentle breeze to keep you cool throughout.
For those who don’t know the beauty of the countryside round Heptonstall I would say, that in my opinion, it outshines anything the Peak District can offer, and the chance to walk there shouldn’t be missed by anyone who enjoys picturesque walks.
The walk linked the beautiful scenery of Colden Water, which we passed through in the initial stages, with the more well-known attractions of Hebden Water which comprised the final section. The central segment included some typical South Pennine moorland walking, with splendid views including the
Stepping stones across Hebden Water and below, overlooking Stoodley Pike dramatic cliffs adjacent to Graining Water which would, on many walks, be the highlight of the day, but not here.
What then were the highlights? Well the view looking over the valley of Colden Water out to Stoodley Pike which we encountered after five minutes must be one.
When we were walking alongside Colden Water the sight of a bubbling, fast-flowing stream bouncing back and forth from rock-to-rock with youthful exuberance must also be included.
The view when we descended into Hebden Water out over the moors and into the valley was breathtaking.
Hebden Water, as you walk along its banks, is similar to Colden but perhaps with more maturity – a 20-year old compared to a young teenager – the water still dances and delights as it runs along but plainly it knows why it’s catching your interest.
Finally one must say that Town Gate in Heptonstall is also almost unique with the 18th Century feel it imparts.
But the perfect walk? Well in my opinion it certainly is – why not go and judge for yourself?
