Kids’ group celebrates five years
THERE were celebrations as a group for children with sight or hearing loss marked its fifth birthday.
The youth club at Walthew House, in Shaw Heath, was set up back in 2010 to cater for youngsters who were fed up of missing out on the fun that other children took for granted.
Now five years later it has supported more than 100 people aged five to 14 - some of whom have been members since it began.
At a celebration there were a variety of games, cake making and a steel band.
June Battye, who has run the club since it was formed, said: “All communication is in sign language and voice and all our activities are designed so that everyone can take part whether they have sight or hearing loss.
“Over the years we have done some amazing things - from archery to playing in a steel band and every year we have gone away to have an adventure weekend.
“As far as we know there isn’t another club that is like ours in the country.”
Walthew House, which was formed in 1882, is a charity that supports people of all ages who have sight or hearing difficulties.
