Great Scott edges Bramhall ‘major’

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

BRAMHALL Golf Club captain Mel Ince had a busy time of it as a full field played over two days for his ‘major’ prize.

At the end of round one the divisional hotshots were Tom Jones 65 from Steve Merricks 66, Scott Bickerton also 65 three less than Peter Robinson, Peter Maher 68 from John Sullivan 69 and Patrick Keenan with 65, two less than Gavin Spencer.

In round two the big guns shot it out in just one division with Philip Hall on top with 64 from David Fidler, Richard Evans and Dan Britton, all 66.

Scott Bickerton came in with a 69 for a two-round total of 134 to pip Steve Merricks by a shot with David Fidler in third place with 136.

Houldsworth are flying high in the two competitions run by the Oldham and District Rabbits League.

They are joint top of the main league with Dukinfield with both clubs having accumulated 27 points from the five games played to date.

In the Cup there are two divisions and a 6-4 win by Houldsweoth at Ashton sees them on top of Group A after two games.

Reddish Vale’s men played their monthly medal and top of the three divisions were Paul Wheelton after a cpo on 67 with Alex Wigley, Michael Warburton after a cpo on 66 with Jon Lloyd and Marc Singleton again after a cpo on 69 with Louis Covell.

Stableford action for Vale’s ladies had Jeanette Kinder leading in with 36 points from Anne Gosling 35 and Lady Captain Sheila Brookes 34.

Cheadle’s men enjoyed their Captain’s competition and none more than Denis Ryan who took top spot and Don Milligan’s top prize with a superb 59 from J Walker 61 and Mike Westbrook 62.

The Lady Captain’s Stableford at Cheadle was won by Sue Barker with 38 points, well clear of Wendy Goodwin 34 and Irene Wright 31.

It was ‘major’ action at Stockport as their men played for the coveted Scratch Gold medal and in round one Cheshire legend David Peel set the pace sharing top spot with Sam Turner with Curtis Brokenbrow and Neil McQueen three shots off the pace.

Sam Turner (pictured) kept up his momentum in round two with 71 from Stephen Warhurst 72 and it was enough to win the competition with a combined score of 142 seeing him home from David Peel 146 and Stephen Warhurst 147.

Medal action for Stockport ladies saw Bev Hall leading in with 68 from Sylvia Hamilton 70 and Ann Williams 71.

The seniors Centenary Cup at Hazel Grove needed a cpo on 40 points to see Stan Marques into top spot from Jim Fox with Nick Taylor and Ian waters next in with 38.

Grove’s ladies were in medal mode with the divisions topped by Kay Allen 70, Karen Rodgers 77 and Emma Owen 74.

Medal play for Marple’s men had division one topped by Peter Law with a stunning 60 seeing him a massive nine shots clear of Aaron Lee and Don Large.

Callum Simpson was first past the post in division two with 63 from Craig Murray 64.

Marple ladies were in Stableford action with Linda Rogers winning a cpo on 34 points from Louise Hodkinson with Julie Gavin and Elaine Jones a point off the pace.

The draws have been made for the third round of the Manchester Alliance Dunham Forest Tro- phy and City Glass Men’s Foursomes Inter Club knockouts but unfortunately local hopes were ended in round two.

In the Dunham Forest Trophy which involves the club professional and the top six amateurs the defending champions Bramhall were beaten in a fiercely contested local derby at Bramall Park and Park now have a home tie against Greenmount as they look to make the last eight.

In the Men’s Foursomes it was the end of the road for our local hopes with Bramhall losing at home to Swinton Park, a fate also suffered by Mellor and Townscliffe and Reddish Vale were beaten at Shaw Hill.

Oldham GC seniors are staging an original Seniors Open on Thursday October 8.

It is titled ‘Oldham on the Flat’ and organiser Mike Dunkerley explained: “For the first time ever an 18-hole competition will be played using the bottom ‘flat’ nine holes twice.

“It means that there will be no climbing up hills (so no panoramic views!) and it is an experiment to encourage entries.

“The entry fee is only £20 per pair and there will be a fantastic prize table.

“To book your entry contact the pro’s shop on 0161 622 0048 or email info@ oldhamgolfclub. com.
