Broady ready for long route to US Open

- TENNIS SPENCER VIGNES

LIAM Broady is determined to prove that he’s no flash in the pan by playing in this year’s US Open.

The 21-year old from Stockport made his Grand Slam singles debut at Wimbledon this week, notching a fine five-set win over Marinko Matosevic before succumbing to the number 16 seed David Goffin in the second round.

Broady knows he the qualifying tournament in order to bag one of the last available places in the draw.

“I’ll do whatever I’ve got to do,” says Broady whose Wimbledon came to an end today with defeat in the men’s doubles, losing 6-1 7-6 6-2 alongside partner Luke Bambridge to Jamie Murray and John Peers in the first round.

“I’ll fly out to the States either this Sunday or Monday, have five days off with the host family that I stay with in Pittsburgh who I’ve got a very good relationship with, and then the hard work begins.

“I’ll go to New York first, do some practice, then on to the Binghamton Challenger, and then all the other Challenger tournaments on the run up to the US (Open). Then it’s a case of seeing how many points I’ve accumulated, what my ranking is, and whether I’ve done enough.

“To be honest I’m not really thinking about it too much. The last year has been all about working on my game, trying to improve my ranking, and seeing where it leads me.

“I don’t expect at all to be automatically into the US. In fact I doubt that’s going to happen.

“But I think I can get some good results over there in the run-up.

“I feel like I’m playing better now than I have done all year.”
