SEASHELL Trust students in Stockport played host to a very special visitor – CBeebies star Mr Tumble

His alter-ego, children’s TV presenter Justin Fletcher, dropped into the leading national disability charity in Cheadle Hulme ahead of his show at the Manchester International Festival.

He is credited with bringing disability awareness to the fore on children’s television through his ground-breaking Something Special show, featuring young guests with disabilities and teaching viewers sign language.

All of the students at Seashell Trust have, along with other complex disabilities, very little or no speech, with many using sign language to communicate.

Alison French, from the charity, said: “He gave a special performance of his songs and the children interacted with him.

“It was very special. The children and staff were delighted and responded really well, there was lots of laughter and joy.”

The Children’s BAFTA winner visited ahead of bringing his unique brand of slapstick and most famous character Mr Tumble to the Manchester International Festival.

He began eight days of The Tale of Mr Tumble with Ronni Ancona at the Opera House on Saturday.

Some Seashell Trust student will be attending the shows.

Jane Woodward, head of Seashell Trust-run Royal School Manchester, said: “Justin Fletcher spent some time visiting classes where he was met by some very excited students.

“Our young people really enjoy watching Mr Tumble on TV and sign along to the stories and songs.

“Some of our students recognised Justin as Mr Tumble even without his costume and when he later appeared in the hall as Mr Tumble they were delighted.

“Justin promotes disability awareness with his signed performances and productions which are totally inclusive.

“He has a great understanding of the needs of children and young people with disabilities and he certainly made an impact with all of us here.

“We would like to thank Justin and the Manchester International Festival for making this happen.”
