Campaign to keep station underpass open to public

-

BARRIERS will make entry to the Stockport train station underpass ticket only – unless a campaign can get it designated a public right of way.

The much-used tunnel that goes under the train lines at the station connects the tip of Edgeley with Grand Central and a taxi rank and gives access to the town centre.

But it is private land and Virgin Trains plans to erect barriers at both ends so people need to buy a train ticket to enter.

Virgin says it is a bid to stop fare-dodging and will result in the creation of seven jobs with ‘welcome hosts’ manning the barriers

The three councillors from the Edgeley and Cheadle Heath ward – Sheila Bailey, Philip Harding and Richard Coaton – hope to stop the plans.

They say the land can be classed as a public right of way if at least seven people who have used the underpass over the last two decades fill in ‘user evidence’ forms.

Coun Bailey said: “The alternative walking route to Grand Central would involve a lengthy detour along Greek Street and Wellington Road South.

“We believe this will inconvenience many residents who have used this underpass for many years

“If Virgin are bothered about people getting on trains without tickets they can stop them at the bottom of the stairs to the platforms.

“Residents who have used this route regularly over the last 20 years, please get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

It is believed that even private land can be given right of way status if people have used it in that way for 20 years or more.

Virgin Trains plans to start using the barriers by August 18.

As part of its West Coast Main Line franchise, Virgin says it is committed to introducing ‘gate lines’ at Stockport station as well as Manchester Piccadilly, Stoke and Crewe.

A spokesman said: “It will be the welcome hosts’ job to meet and greet customers, acting as ambassadors and use their discretion to grant access either to the platform or subway for those not intending to travel.

“We met with council officials to discuss how we can work together. We hope to have positive news in coming weeks.

“The key longer-term aim is ensuring everyone is aware, not only of the change but the alternative routes available to them.”
