Rory will be back after narrow miss
STOCKPORT Harrier Rory Evans tried his utmost in the Sainsbury’s British athletics championships at the Alexander Stadium, BIrmingham.
Evans came through the heats with a season’s best of 46:99 for the 400 metre one lap circuit.
But a slightly slower time in the next round, the semi finals, of 47:33 edged him out of taking his place in the final with only three to go through from each of the semis and two fastest losers. No doubt he’ll be back for more before the end of the summer season.
Strong club representation was in evidence as usual in the longer distance of 5,000 metres with Ross Millington finishing fourth (14:01:69) out of a field of 22 finishers.
In the ladies equivalent event, Jessica Coulson also made it a fourth placed finish in 15:50:03 in a sprint over fifthplaced Beth Potter of Shaftsbury (15:50:97) out of 16 finishers giving her a season’s best for her efforts.
Glad tidings came the way of the Harriers in the English schools combined events at the Bebington Oval with Charlotte Ogden being crowned national champion in the senior girls heptathlon. She won four out of her seven events, four of which she had never competed in before, setting a new national event record in the 200 metres sprint.
Sophie Decker represented Cheshire and finished 11th with six personal bests in the intermediate girls event and the boys were not going to be outdone with Rob Stokoe and Cameron Stewart finishing fourth and sixth respectively in the junior boys pentathlon and with personal bests aplenty.
The final track and field league fixture for the Youth Development league (lower age group) takes place at Wigan this coming Saturday with the first event timed to start at 11.30am.
It’s expected that Stockport will remain in the West 1 division and are currently lying mid table in fourth position out of seven teams.
