Young United Nations in big debate
YOUNGSTERS from secondary schools across Stockport took part in a mock United Nations debate.
The event, organised by Stockport Council with the University of Manchester, featured a mock UN General Assembly debating human trafficking at Stockport Town Hall.
Students from year nine gave speeches, debated issues and worked together to write a resolution on which they voted and passed.
Eighty pupils took part and 16 countries from around the world were represented by teams of four students from different schools.
Councillor Shan Alexander, executive member for communities, attended the event and said: “The day showed the qualities of the young people in our schools.
“Their commitment, engagement, enthusiasm and contribution to the debate was exemplary and the high level of public speaking was extraordinary.”
The Model United Nations supports young people to develop life-skills such as critical thinking, conflict resolution and negotiation.
Schools taking part included Kingsway. Stockport School, Marple Hall and Hazel Grove High.
