Mum and son cruising to great fundraising target of £1,121
A MOTHER and son from Marple teamed-up to put on a fundraising cruise in aid of the British Heart Foundation and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).
Jeanette and Rocco Zaman-Browne put on the event last month on the Ring o’Bells canal boat, which sailed from the Ring o’Bells pub in Marple, raising £1,121.
They were inspired to raise funds for the two charities in memory of Jeanette’s godson James Usher, who sadly passed away last year at the age of just 25 from an undiagnosed heart condition.
Jeanette said: “As both my husband and son have diagnosed heart conditions, it really added to our heartbreak knowing that if James’ condition had been discovered he would be here today.”
Each week in the UK on average 12 seemingly fit and healthy young men and women collapse and die from undiagnosed heart conditions.
CRY holds free screenings funded by donations for young adults aged between 15 and 35.
Rocco has been to London to see one of the charity’s top cardiologists in the field of sport, Sanjay Sharma, and has been able to continue playing sports as a result.
Jeanette said: “He was diagnosed by accident but sadly the first time families think to attend these screenings is after a loved one has collapsed and died.
“It took me nine months to get Rocco’s consultation with a known heart defect, yet you can walk into these screenings – that’s how fantastic CRY’s work is.”
Jeanette extended her thanks to the businesses that got behind the event, and the Ring O’Bells for providing a bucks fizz reception and buffet.
