Champion claims big names in title win

- BOWLS JAMIE BRAMLEY

JOHN Davies proved the master of Leamington Road with another Houldsworth WMC sweep win.

Davies this time took the Frank Beeley Trophy, claming some highlynotable scalps on route to the title.

In the quarter-finals Davies had too much for Wales’ most capped bowler Roger Morgan.

The semi-finals saw Davies meet an in-form Simon Coupe in what looked set to be a close affair. Coupe had just swept aside crowd favourite Jack Hargreaves by some 11 chalks.

Davies was in the zone again though this time, running out the winner 31-26.

The other semi-final was between arguably the modern era’s top two players of the game.

G I Wilson got one over on his rival Gary Ellis though, sauntering past the winning line 31-14.

The final swung both ways with the lead changing hands several times.

Davies kept edging matters though and got his hands on the big pot with a 31-28 victory.

That’s two major sweeps taken this campaign on Houldsworth WMC for Davies.

The weekend saw sweep action return to The Grange with ladies taking centre stage.

One of the women’s game’s top players Maliza Herbert booked herself a place on finals day.

Local hopes were boosted when Jackie Gloag, from Hyde, and Michelle Sands, from Woodley, also completed qualification.

The likes of Debbie Farmer and Vicky Buckley could be names to watch out for at the final on August 30.

This weekend The Osprey sponsored men’s version is on at The Grange. There is play all day Saturday and Sunday with many of the games top players in action.

All the local leagues are now in the closing stages with all the prizes still up for grabs.

In the S and D League Houldsworth WMC look odds on to take the prize again with Poynton Sports chasing hard. There’s also a repeat of the Brunner Cup Final with Tixall and Gladstone from Liverpool competing for the prize.
