The new football season finally kicks off
She's the artist formerly known as Kelly Dalglish, a woman with football racing through her veins, and she's one of the co-hosts of Channel 5's new Football LeagueTonight programme (Saturday, Channel 5, 9pm). Kelly Cates (as she's been called since her marriage to her longterm boyfriend Tom Cates in 2007) is the daughter of Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, and was born in 1975, while her father was still playing for Celtic. You would think that she had grown up a fan of the Reds, but not so, Blackburn Rovers became her team during Kenny's four-year spell as manager at Ewood Park. Hopefully she will be able to remain professionally detached whenever they appear on this programme, although, as football supporters will tell you, being impartial where the beautiful game is involved is almost impossible. Despite the growing number of female football journalists, some people still raised eyebrows when Kelly's name was announced. But, thanks to her brilliant CV, which includes working for Sky, Setanta, ITV, ESPN and BBC 5 Live, she will easily prove any naysayers still living in the dark ages wrong. She's joined on-screen by another 5 Live alumnus, George Riley. He's an all-rounder who has presented shows about a wide variety of sports, but is perhaps best known to Twitter fans for his online flirtations with Andy Murray's mother Judy, which began in 2013 and resulted in him joining her to watch her son play at Wimbledon. Perhaps the biggest news surrounding the programme is that it is being broadcast by Channel 5, who are taking over screening Football League fixtures from the BBC. Itís also showing in a much earlier timeslot, which means that fans will no longer have to wait until the wee small hours to see their team in action. The big kick off does, of course, take place today. It may only seem like a few short weeks since the last season ended, but for football-starved fans, it feels as if it was an eon away. No doubt the Premier League, thanks to its superstar players and managers, not to mention the over-inflated wages, will grab the majority of Sunday's headlines, but there are another 72 professional clubs outside the top flight whose supporters are just as eager to get the 2015-16 season started. The build-up will have begun at the end of June when the fixtures were announced.
