Final sweep as winter arrives

- BOWLS JAMIE BRAMLEY

WINTER bowling began in earnest at Love Lane in the town’s only sweep between now and April.

In round one Leigh Smith and James Jones put out the fancied Steve Ellis and Gary Hoof pairing 21-18.

Poynton visitors Steve Ramsbottom and Derek Bates sailed into the quarter finals with a cool success.

Also on song were Paul Craven and Chris Eaton who eliminated Chris Wood and Heather Bramley 21-13.

In the quarter finals Craven and Eaton needed nerves of steel to cling on and beat Andy Jones and Anita Talbot 21-20.

It was the same scenario for Jamie Bramley and John Cunningham who clung on by the minimum margin 21-20 against Lord and Woodcock.

The much fancied Gloag and Teasdale were next to fall 13-21 in a shock. Leigh Smith and James Jones were finding the heavy going to their liking and claimed the notable scalp.

The remaining winning quarter finalists were Whyatt and Greenwood who sauntered home 21-10.

The semi finals saw Bramley and Cunningham’s best performance as they won 21-13 with a solid display.

The other match saw Smith and Jones at it again grinding out a 21-17 victory.

The final was close throughout with the pairings tied at 9-9 11-11 and again at 14-14.

Smith and Jones though broke away from here and were deserved 21-14 winners the best duo on the day. In the flyer eight year old Jake Bramley and thirteen year old Ben Mills took part. Both performed creditable and look good for the future against older more experienced players.

The final was won by Chris Talbot who had too much fire power for Ben Gloag.

Also on Sunday The Ben Dawson trophy final took place at Woodley Sports with Ladybridge the favourites.

Houldsworth WMC had other ideas though using their handicap and a bit to spare to land the title.

That’s the local bowling scene complete for another year with presentation evenings on the horizon. Love Lane continues next week with a singles, contact Jamie Bramley on 07922 789909 for details.
