New heritage trail puts history of Heaton Norris on the map

-

A NEW heritage trail has been created which explores the history of Heaton Norris.

The map covers a two and a half mile route and features various points of interest, including pubs, churches, parks and other buildings.

It has been created by the Heatons Heritage Society, with the support of the Love Heaton Norris community group.

The trail, which has 33 stops, begins at the Crown pub, a Grade II listed building which started life as a brewery more than 180 years ago and ends at the M60 motorway.

It also features the Dodge Hill conservation area, the Albion Flour Mill, Reddish Canal and the Sir Ralph Pendlebury Memorial Hall amongst others.

Stockport Viaduct, the Lancashire Hill flats and the Rope Works on Stanbank Street also make the trail.

A number of pubs and businesses helped to support the publication of the trail by providing sponsorship, including the Crown Inn, the Midland, the Magnet, the Railway, the Hope Inn, Paul’s Corner Shop, the Navigation and Conrad Nelstrop.

The Heaton Norris trail is the latest in a series of printed guides which explore the Four Heatons.

The society has already created trails for Heaton Moor and Heaton Chapel, and would like to do one about Heaton Mersey.

Phil Rowbotham, who designed the trail, says the society is planning to eventually create geocache hotspots at every point on the trail, to give people another way to explore it.

He added: “It’s all about putting the Four Heatons on the map.”

Printed copies of the trails can be picked up in the Heatons library, Stockport town hall and various pubs and other venues in and around Heaton Norris.
