Hazel Grove pub’s toilet is just simply loo-perb say inspectors
A STOCKPORT pub has won acclaim for the quality and standards of its toilets – in the Loo of the Year Awards 2016.
The Wilfred Wood in London Road, Hazel Grove has been awarded a Platinum Star rating by inspectors – which is the highest award possible.
The awards are aimed at highlighting and improving standards of a ‘home away from home’ toilet provision across the UK.
Authorised inspectors make unannounced visits to hundreds of toilets at sites across the UK, in order to judge them.
All of the toilets are graded on a scale of Bronze to Gold.
There are even some toilets deemed unacceptable which are not graded at all.
The Platinum Star rating is given only to outlets which offer “exceptional toilets”.
The toilets are judged against numerous criteria, including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand washing and drying equipment and overall management.
The Wilfred Wood, a Wetherspoon pub, is managed by Stephen Clough. He said: “I am delighted with the award. Staff at the pub work hard to ensure the toilets are in first-class condition at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors.”
The Loo of the Year Awards 2016 managing director, Mike Bone, said: “The toilets at The Wilfred Wood have been designed and fitted out to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained.
“The pub richly deserves its platinum award – the highest individual award the judges can deliver.”
Wilfred Wood (18971982), was a soldier who fought in the First World War for which he received the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was awarded the medal as a 21-year-old Private serving with the 10th Battallion the Northumberland Fusiliers during the battle of Vittorio Veneto.
