Fundraisers give hospice boost

-

A TEACHER at Marple Hall School and his friends raised a whopping £28,335 for a hospice which treated his wife.

Jow Owen lost his wife Jessica to cancer last year and wanted to help the East Cheshire Hospice in Macclesfield for the help it had given.

Since then, he and his friends launched the Race for Jessica campaign which saw them take on a raft of tough challenges to raise the total.

Jow, who is curriculum leader in design and technology at the school said: “There aren’t enough tags in Facebook to accommodate the number of people I need to pay thanks to.

“I have met some amazing people and had some of the most life-changing experiences, having run distances I thought I wouldn’t be able to and cycled the length of the country.”

Among the challenges Jow and his friends have taken on are the London and West Tough Mudder event in April, the Midlands Tough Mudder in May and the Scotland Tough Mudder in June.

They also went on a four-man cycle ride from John O’Groats to Lands End, covering 900 miles in the space of 10 days.

Jow and his team spent months training for the events and were delighted with the results of their efforts.

East Cheshire hospice costs £7500 per day to stay open only 17 per cent of which comes from government funding - the rest comes from fundraising.
