Next stop for bus couple is 60 years of bliss
A COUPLE who travelled home from their wedding by catching the bus have celebrated reaching 60 years on their married journey together.
Jack and Mona Mason, from Brinnington, tied the knot at St Augustine’s Church, in Cheadle Heath, on December 22, 1956.
After a reception at the Farmers Arms the couple caught the bus and then a tram to get home.
Celebrations on the anniversary day itself were low-key as it was too near Christmas, but a party with family and friends at the Puss in Boots, Offerton, is planned for the New Year.
Jack, who was doing national service with the Royal Field Artillery at the time, said: “Coming home we had to catch the bus. Mona was in her wedding dress and I was in my uniform.
“It wasn’t that glamorous but I wouldn’t change it for the world, it will be something we will always remember.
“People were looking at us, I remember quite a lot about the day.”
Jack, 79, met Mona, 78, three years earlier at a dance they had both gone to independently with their friends.
After marrying, Jack spent 15 years in the Army Emergency Reserves before becoming a HGV driver for Stockport Council.
Mona worked at the Portwood Spinning Company.
Together they have travelled extensively to destinations including India, the USA the Czech Republic and Greece.
Closer to home Mona has accompanied Jack on fishing trips in the countryside.
He said: “I remember the first time I saw Mona at the dance, I thought ‘what a beauty.’
“We’ve had a couple of rows but we’ve stayed together ever since.
There has been arguments and making up but we are both easy going and there has been give and take.”
