SEVEN MILES OUT

THIS Thursday evening we’re delighted to host the first comedy night of the New Year when A Laugh In Stockport comedy club returns to Seven Miles Out with a stellar line-up of comedy performers.

After the sell-out success of last year’s events, make sure you get your ticket for another riotous evening brought to you by our local resident King of Comedy, Mr Martin Bain.

Brummie Andy White is a stalwart of the UK comedy scene, a regular at all the major clubs (Comedy Store, Frog and Bucket, Glee Club, Jongleurs, The Stand, and many more) and remains the only comic allowed to have an encore (the audience would have rioted otherwise).

He’s also gigged as far afield as Berlin and Monte Carlo, and even managed to win BBC’s Weakest Link comedians special!

‘Had me exercising my pelvic floor muscles to avoid an accident’ Karen Slater, BBC Tees#

Adam Staunton’s diminutive size and youthful appearance belies a sharp comedy brain and one of the most confident stage presences in the business that has seen him perform alongside the likes of John Bishop, Sarah Millican and Jack Whitehall.

‘What he lacks in height he certainly makes up for in talent, getting the biggest laughs of the night.’ ThreeWeeks

Resident MC, Danny Sutcliffe, is the new unofficial face of Aldi. Bless him.

Doors for the event open at 7.15pm and the show starts 7.45pm. Get your tickets online or from us at Seven Miles Out – only £7 in advance or £8 on the night.

On Friday evening we’re delighted to host an evening of up and coming talent from Bramhall.

We love to support up and coming bands from around the Stockport borough so we are delighted to welcome three Bramhall-based bands to Seven Miles Out: – Vintage Keys, The Outsiders and The Tall Faces.

The Outsiders are a band of young teens who played in Seven Miles Out on Foodie Friday in December and went down a storm.

Vintage Keys are also pupils at Bramhall High School and this will be their first gig outside school.

Finally The Tall Faces may sound familiar, they perform 1960’s mod cover versions and feature two of The Outsiders’ parents so we’ve got a proper ‘lads and dads’ showcase!

This is also their first gig so please give them your support.

We have been very fortunate to find some great young talent over the last year so please check out this night as you may be seeing more of these performers.

We guarantee you a great night perfect for all the family so bring them down.

CHADS THEATRE

‘On Golden Pond’ by Ernest Thompson Saturday, January 28, to Saturday, February 4, at 7.45pm THIS warm and amusing play won many prizes on Broadway, before becoming a popular Academy Award winning film in 1981 with Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn and Jane Fonda. A modern classic, it is brilliantly witty and humorous while an undercurrent of heartbreak and suppressed emotion lies beneath.

Each summer the ageing retired professor Norman Thayer and his wife Ethel return to their house on a lake called Golden Pond in Maine. People and generations come and go – like the loons and their offspring living on the lake – but lakeside life continues as it always has.

As the increasingly curmudgeonly Norman’s 80th birthday looms their estranged daughter Chelsea arrives with her new partner Bill and his son Billy.

Still bitter about an unhappy childhood relationship with her father she has both relationship and self-image issues which she blames on him.

Bill and Chelsea are heading for Europe to marry and leave behind Billy with the old timers.

A charming friendship builds between the sharp-witted Norman and the street-smart boy as they learn from each other.

When the time comes for Billy to leave Golden Pond some old issues are still to be resolved…

The simplicity of life on Golden Pond provides a backdrop where second childhoods and second chances are possible.

GARRICK THEATRE STOCKPORT

Copenhagen: Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 January

When it comes to the playwright Michael Frayn, most amateur theatre companies invariably perform his most famous work, Noises Off – a lively comedy farce which always guarantees bums on seats.

So huge credit, then, to Stockport Garrick Theatre for attempting a revival of one of Frayn’s most challenging – and perhaps less crowdpleasing – dramatic works: Copenhagen.

First seen at the National Theatre in 1998, Copenhagen is a thrilling, dramatic piece which tackles quantum mechanics, the uncertainty principle, and the mysterious visit the German physicist Werner Heisenberg paid to his former teacher and mentor Niels Bohr in Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1941.

Historians have long argued about the purpose of this trip, which ended badly. Was Heisenberg tipping off his old friend that Germany was developing atomic weapons? Was he hoping to receive his former tutor’s blessing for his nuclear research? Widely regarded as Frayn’s finest dramatic work (Noises Off being a comedy), Copenhagen has been adapted on numerous occasions for the TV and radio – the most famous being a 2002 TV movie starring Daniel Craig. Now, thanks to those talented – and ever ambitious - folks at the Stockport Garrick, we can enjoy the work in its original theatrical incarnation.

For tickets priced £7.50/£6.50 concs, call 0161 477 7779 or visit – stockportgarrick.co.uk David Sue
