Music will paint a picture at concert

STOCKPORT Symphony Orchestra will play its first concert of 2017 under the baton of Richard Davis at the end of this month.

The concert, entitled Pictures, will take place on Saturday, January 28 and will kick off with William Walton’s Scapino: A Comedy Overture.

This will be followed by a performanc­e of Rachmanino­v’s Cinq Etudes-Tableaux – which translates literally as ‘picture pieces’.

The second half will comprise of Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky; a suite of 10 pieces, each a musical illustrati­on of works by the artist Hartmann.

One of the final two scenes is one of the most renowned – ‘The Hut on Fowl’s Legs’ is a nightmaris­h portrayal of the cackling witch BabaYaya on the prowl for prey.
