Science student goes for gold with award
A student from Manchester Grammar School has received a prestigious science award for his pioneering research.
Danyal Abbas, 17, won a Gold CREST Award from the British Science Association for his work on a research project at the University of Manchester.
Danyal, from Cheadle, was one of 100 applicants out of 9,000 awarded a Nuffield Research Placement scholarship, a charity aiming to improve social wellbeing by funding research projects.
His project was titled ‘Human cone photoreceptor sensitivity recovery after a photobleach’ and focused on a new technique for the early diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration.
The project used a newly-developed medical apparatus called the MPS II, the first ever trials using this machine.
Danyal said: “I was absolutely delighted to have been awarded a Nuffield Scholarship and have found the experience to be thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding.
“It’s one of the best things I have ever done.”
