Athlete mentor on board
A champion athlete is set to mentor two lucky Stockport students.
Cain Dean and Ireland Howard, both from Stockport School, have been selected for the Unlocking Potential programme, run by the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and AQA exam board.
The pair will be mentored by former European and British Champion for skateboarding, Neil Danns, who will provide personal guidance over the next eight months.
The school is one of 28 on this year’s programme, with the aim to mentor young people aged 14 to 19 who have faced personal challenges or disadvantages, and help see them deliver a community project.
Matt Williamson, director of intervention at Stockport School, said: “This programme has the potential to really make a massive difference to their lives.
“Both students are such incredible characters and I really feel that the support from Neil will really benefit them along the way and we will see benefits in our school and local area through the community project.”
Dame Kelly Holmes added: “The athlete mentors know what it takes to overcome adversity and have the will to succeed not only in sport, but in life too.
“I’m really excited that this fantastic programme is now in its sixth year and to see more young people transformed through our life changing programme!”
