Call to save vandalised ‘masterpiece’ vicarage

ACAMPAIGN has begun to save a vicarage that is an ‘architectural masterpiece’ from demolition to make way for new homes.

Purcell Developments want to build eight houses at the site of St George’s vicarage, off Buxton Road, Davenport, which was abandoned 15 years ago.

It has submitted a planning application to the council saying that the Grade II listed building, which is said to have historical significance, is beyond repair. But Stockport Heritage Trust say the building can be saved and accused church bosses of not doing enough to keep it maintained and secure from vandals.

John Fidler, from the trust as well as Stockport Building Preservation Trust, has sent a detailed letter of objection to the council on behalf of both organisations - urging a refusal of planning permission.

He said: “In my professional view, claims about the building’s irretrievable dereliction have been overrated.

“The vicarage is part of the masterwork by architect Hubert James Austin.

“Its values are not wholly lost and can be retrieved, restored and enhanced through appropriate conservation actions.

“Security and maintenance of the vicarage have been exceedingly poor for a long period of time resulting in architectural thefts, vandalism and arson.

“We hope that all Stopfordians who appreciate their local heritage will join with us and also object to the plans.”

The site’s owner, Chester Diocesan Board of Education, has spent £225,000 on repairs and security over nine years.

But Mr Fidler says this is insufficient and his letter states this has only been done when enforcement action was threatened by the council.

Another accusation is that the property has been inadequately marketed and could have been restored and converted into new homes itself.

Mr Fidler now lives in the USA but has been asked to write on behalf of the objectors as he is from Stockport and a retired director of English Heritage.

James Sanderson, from applicants Purcell Developments, said after careful assessment it was decided it was not viable to restore the vicarage.

He added: “We have designed high quality new family homes to transform the site.”
