E-by gum, sign is an own goal say County fans
THE council has scored an own goal with Stockport County fans - after misspelling the club’s ground on a sign at a swanky new development.
A signpost at the Stockport Exchange commercial area, next to the town’s main train station, directs supporters to ‘Edgely Park Football Ground’.
Another sign there also informs visitors of the way to ‘Edgely shops’.
The error has been reported and the council have put a bag over the sign and intend to replace it.
Fans of the Hatters have also spotted the mistake but have seen the funny side.
Callum Jefcoate, 39, said: “The ground has been in Edgeley - quite a well known area of Stockport - for many decades.
“So you would have thought being able to spell the name correctly would be second nature, especially to the an official body like the council.
“It’s a bit embarrassing for them and for County really, makes it seem the club isn’t to be taken seriously.”
Will Jones, 31, added: “It doesn’t look great in a brand new development so it’s caused a bit of a chuckle but I’m sure everyone will still find their way to the ground.
“It has been noticed by quite a few people so I wouldn’t want to be the person who got that wrong.”
A resident highlighted the mistake to Edgeley and Cheadle Heath councillor Philip Harding, who in turn has informed the relevant council officers.
He said: “It should be changed in the next week or so, I can see the funny side but it still needs changing.”
Stockport Exchange, in the area previously known as Grand Central, is a multi-million redevelopment containing a multi-storey car park, hotel, offices and public space.
Caroline Simpson, Stockport Council’s corporate director for place, said: “The mistake seems to have been made by the sign manufacturer and as soon as we noticed the error we ordered an replacement.
“The sign will be replaced this week. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.” urgent
