Young cancer survivor turned social entrepreneur visits club

-

THE Rotary Club of Stockport Lamplighter welcomed two inspirational young visitors to their meeting.

Last year, the club donated some of the money raised through their Christmas float to the charity CLIC Sargent, which supports children with a cancer diagnosis.

The charity supported more than 70 Stockport families during the past 12 months.

As a thank you to Lamplighter, the charity’s fundraiser brought along two young men who have benefited from the support of the charity to the Lamplighter’s meeting at Heaton Moor Golf Club last Wednesday.

One of the young men, Babz, was diagnosed with cancer on his 21st birthday. He spoke with great affection and emotion of the work of the charity and how it helped him and of how he has since become a volunteer through his social enterprise programme.

He works with friend Kon arranging music workshops for young people in the area who have been diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia.

This enables the youngsters to meet up with others who have a similar diagnosis so that they do not feel isolated and also gives them a lot of pleasure.

Lamplighters president, Bernadette Holgate presented CLIC’s fundraiser and the two young people with a speakers certificate as a thank you for spending their evening with members of the club.

Bernadette said: “Lamplighters would like to thank the people of Stockport as without their support, donations such as this would not be possible.”

CLIC Sargent is one of a number of charities and local good causes which has benefited from the fundraising efforts of the Lamplighters.
