Police were at the scene on Tuesday morning, although the hotel remained open to the public.

Detectives are trawling through CCTV footage from cameras in and around the hotel as part of a continuing investigation.

Staff at the hotel declined to talk about the shooting, although a Britannia spokesman said: “The company are assisting police with their enquiries and the hotel is operating as normal.”

The hotel is situated in a largely residential area and some householders have spoken of their shock.

One said: “It’s a busy place. You don’t expect that at a hotel in the middle of Stockport.”

Although the victim has suffered very serious injuries, detectives are hopeful she can make a good recovery.

The Britannia Hotel housed asylum seekers in 2015.

A spokesman for government contractor Serco told us: “There are no asylum seekers at the Britannia Hotel, or any other hotels in the county, placed by Serco.

“It was always intended as a temporary measure.”

The hotel is described on its own website as ‘a modern hotel situated in a quiet residential district close to Stockport’s bustling town centre, with a wide range of shops and entertainment’.

It has a cocktail bar, restaurant, gym, swimming pool and sauna.

Detectives remained tight-lipped about the shooting although they have appealed to the public for any information.

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident number 122 of 31/01/17, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
