- STEPHEN BOWER

FEBRUARY is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) History Month. It is a time when we reflect on the past and present lives of LGBT people.

In previous years, the month has seen events staged in Stockport including talks by the likes of retired NBA basketball star John Amaechi and political commentator Owen Jones. There have also been a number of films, workshops and activities going on.

The borough’s LGBT social group, People Like Us Stockport, have put together a programme of events this year.

We attended the first event on Saturday at Disability Stockport, where historian Gill Rossini talked about the community’s fight for equality. We think it’s amazing how much has changed since the late 1950s. This evening (Wednesday 8), the social group have teamed up with the borough’s LGBT youth group, The Wednesdays, to present a pub quiz in the Arden Arms in the town centre. We don’t know how many we’ll manage to answer, but on a positive note - like the rest of the events – there’s no entry fee.

Hollyoaks actress Annie Wallace will be visiting Disability Stockport on Sunday, February 19, to talk about her experiences as a trans person on television. It’s going to be hard for us not to see her as her on-screen persona – the school headmistress. Annie’s visit will also coincide with the launch of a new community group for trans people.

Finally in Stockport on Wednesday 22, things are a bit more relaxed as the social group has organised a fun bingo night. This will be the final event in the borough for LGBT History Month.

We will be attending the events throughout February and report back about what is going on. Join us for Under The Rainbow on Pure 107.8FM every Thursday 8-9pm.
