Matty maintains his perfect record

- BOXING SHELDAN KEAY

MATTY Mainwaring continued the perfect start to his professional boxing career after a dominant points win over Chris Jenkinson on Friday.

The former Stockport County footballer won 40-36 after four rounds at the Bowlers Exhibition Centre to extend his unbeaten record to 5-0.

Mainwaring has looked impressive since hanging up his boots to become a boxer, and he was glad to get another win under his belt.

“I felt really good out there and I’m now just focusing on getting back in the ring for another fight as quickly as possible,” he said.

“That was probably my last four rounder so I’m excited to step up to six rounds as I always feel great and that I’ve got a lot more left to give when the fourth round is over.

“I think I’ll really come into my own over a longer distance. I’ve got a great team around me and I want to thank them and the fans who came down to support me.”

Mainwaring is trained by Matthew Hatton at his Metro Fitness Gym in Stockport, and Hatton was impressed.

“Matty has proven to a lot of people so far that he does have a lot of skill and we saw that again against Chris Jenkinson,” said Hatton. “He didn’t get hit much in the fight and didn’t have a mark on him so it was a near perfect performance, but obviously there will always be room for improvement.

“I’m really proud of what Matty has managed to achieve so far and hopefully he’ll be back in the ring soon.”
