Golfing marathon for charity

-

A GOLFER went on an epic fundraising drive by playing seven consecutive rounds in one day.

Jimmy Lister, 30, the pro at Marple Golf Club, took to the greens to celebrate its 125th anniversary and to raise cash for the British Heart Foundation.

He completed six full rounds and a seventh of 17 holes to play a total of 125 - one for each year since the club, on Barnsfold Road, was formed in 1892.

The marathon session began at 4.30am and Jimmy sunk his final putt at 5.15pm before enjoying a drink at the club bar.

Speaking afterwards he said: “I’m a bit sore, it started getting difficult after about four rounds. My feet, legs and arms were aching.

“My best rounds were the second and third ones but my play got worse as it went on and the last one was a bit of a struggle. It was the furthest I’ve ever walked in my life in one go.

“But I enjoyed the last part when the members were all out to support me.”

Jimmy, of Windermere Avenue, Denton, walked a total of around 31 miles and played more than 500 shots during the day.

He became the pro at Marple Golf Club two years ago. At his previous club in Denton a member had done a similar thing for its 100th anniversary.

So far Jimmy has raised around £1,500 and this will be split between club funds and the British Heart Foundation.

He chose the charity as it has particular relevance because some club members have suffered from heart conditions.

Jimmy said: “I lost a few balls, especially towards the latter stages, so I couldn’t say how many.

“”I’ll need a little rest but I’ll be back playing again within a week.”

The club will celebrate its 125th anniversary during the weekend of August 12 and 13.

There will be an open day, a competition, and a family fun day.
