School is rated ‘outstanding’ for second time
STAFF and pupils at a Stockport special school are celebrating after receiving their second ‘outstanding’ Ofsted report in a row.
Castle Hill High School in Offerton was inspected by the government’s education watchdog last month and staff found out last week that they had gained the highest possible rating.
Headteacher John Law said: “We are absolutely chuffed to bits. Everyone has worked really hard and it really is a team effort.
“Everyone is delighted for the staff and the students.”
He said that since the school, which caters for youngsters with a range of special educational needs, was last inspected three years ago it has undergone a number of major changes – including moving from its previous site in Brinnington, which has meant taking on more pupils and opening a sixth form.
“It was very challenging changing buildings, but the new building is fantastic,” Mr Law said. “We now have 214 pupils, which is a lot for a special school.
“It also means that we have been recruiting every year, which is good because it keeps everything nice and fresh, but it is also a challenge because it takes up a lot of time.
“We have managed to recruit really good and like-minded people, which is very important.”
The school received outstanding in every inspection category, including effectiveness of leadership and management; quality of teaching, learning and assessment; personal development, behaviour and welfare; outcomes for pupils; 16 to 19 study programmes and overall effectiveness.
The report states: “Pupils’ attitudes and engagement in lessons are outstanding, as is their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Their behaviour in and around school is exemplary.
“The headteacher, with the support of other leaders and governors, has inspired and motivated his staff to manage a tremendously successful move to a new location and premises.
“There have been changes in leadership, staffing and pupil intake as well as the development of a new sixth form during the past three years.
“These achievements are exceptional.”
