TWO Stockport councillors have made their mark on the new Brinnington sports and leisure centre by signing one of the beams being used in the building.

Councillors Becky Crawford and Chris Murphy joined stakeholders in signing their names, before watching the beam being lowered into place. The new £6 million centre is set to open in early 2018 and will include facilities for badminton, five-a- side football, basketball and a range of other sports and activities.

There will also be a new dance and aerobic studio, a 40-station fitness suite and a new home for Brinnington Boxing Club.

Councillor Sheila Bailey said: “It’s great to see that work is progressing very well to create this much needed leisure centre in Brinnington, which will bring high quality, affordable facilities that will be accessible to everyone.”

Anthony Dillon, managing director at Willmott Dixon, said: “The completion of the steelwork is a significant milestone in what will be a fantastic facility for the community and we are working closely with both Stockport and Carillion to ensure we maximise the economic impact during the construction phase with local labour and suppliers.”
