Mayor’s ‘pride’ in lifesaving teenager

-

THE mayor of Stockport has praised the brave actions of a hero teen who saved a woman from drowning.

Liam Pastore, 14, rescued the woman when she got into trouble in the sea at Formby beach near Southport last month.

Instinct kicked in when he heard her daughter’s desperate plea for help and the teenager battled the strong current to bring the woman back to the shore.

She was unconscious and frothing at the mouth when he saved her, but thankfully she woke up when she was resuscitated.

The woman was then taken to Aintree University Hospital by air ambulance for further treatment.

Now Mayor of Stockport, Linda Holt, has spoken of her immense pride for the brave teen, saying he deserves national recognition.

She said: “This selfless act of bravery deserves not just local but national recognition.

“Liam risked his own life to save the life of another.

“His family must rightly be very proud of him as we are in Stockport and I look forward to welcoming Liam to the town hall at the earliest opportunity.”

The brave Reddish Vale High School pupil previously told how he jumped into action when he heard the woman’s young daughter’s cry to help her mum.

Liam, who is an amateur boxer training at Jimmy Egan’s boxing academy in Wythenshawe, said that he ‘did what anyone else would do.’

He said: “I heard the daughter screaming and grabbed hold of her mum, then swam her back as fast as I could, it was pretty far out, the tide was coming in and the current was pretty strong.

“I thought, I have to get her back to shore.

“It was all kind of a blur. I was a little bit shaken after. I only did what anyone else would do.”

His mum Aiysha, 38, from Reddish said: “I was already proud of him, but I’m immensely proud of him now. He rang me and said ‘I’ve just saved somebody’s life.’ He said ‘It’s something anybody else would have done’ – but not everybody would have been able to do it.”

Shaun Egan, from Jimmy Egan’s Boxing Academy, said: “Liam is a hardworking, dedicated lad. When any member of the gym does something good - in or out of the ring - we’re always proud of them.”
